“An act of madness” was the initial reaction of the British Driving Society. This beautiful, 100 page, hardback book with over 200 stunning photographs tells the story of the amazing and unique challenge to drive a WW1 horse–drawn ambulance 1,000 miles, non–stop, day and night from Land’s End to John O’Groats with a team of 7 very seriously wounded soldiers.

The aim of the challenge is to raise substantial funds for the rapidly growing number of our war wounded.

A disparate team of 46 volunteers with 21 horses and numerous support vehicles, set out from Lands End on 21 June 2011. The rolling 24 hour caravan extended over 80 miles from end to end at times. The team achieved its record–breaking goal in 8 days.

Adam de Silva, who captured these fantastic photographs, commented afterwards, “Every day I saw happiness, sadness, moments of reflection and relationships pushed to the test. Most of all I saw a group of people including 7 injured ex–servicemen work together and share one goal; to overcome adversity and accomplish something.”

“To carriage drive a pair of horses the length of Great Britain, continuously for ten days, combines in one the great British traits of thirst for adventure, support and compassion for our wounded soldiers, sailors and airmen, and a love of horses – with just the mildest sprinkling of healthy eccentricity.”
